6 Popular Home Design Styles for 2023

One of the toughest (and most exciting) parts of building a new home or remodeling your existing space is choosing a home design style. Check out our overview of six top styles to help you define the look and feel that you love. Each section also includes architectural elements to include when working with your Allied contractor.

Transitional

This is the most popular style today. It’s a nice blend of modern and traditional, masculine and feminine. Bring this style home with a neutral color palette, light-colored tile or hardwood flooring, all-white shaker cabinets, and large fireplaces. Instead of ornate moldings, transitional homes feature cleaner millwork pieces.

Traditional

Drawing its inspiration from the 18th and 19th centuries, the traditional design pulls from iconic English and French styles of the time. When incorporating it into your new home design, consider dark wood floors, lots of symmetry, decorative moldings, ceiling medallions, and ornative fireplaces. When considering color palettes, opt for warm tones and colors.

Modern

A blend of Scandinavian, mid-century modern, and post-modern styles, today’s modern design style is all about clean lines and sleek surfaces. If you love open-concept floor plans, clean lines, and large windows that let in that gorgeous natural light, then modern may be the style for you. Choose modern fixtures and hardware to add an edge to your space: look for angular designs in a gold or black finish.

Contemporary

Rather than a static style based on a specific time period, contemporary home design is always changing. It basically refers to what’s happening in the present moment. Today you’ll find open spaces, mixed materials, and large windows. Contemporary homes also often feature eco-friendly and sustainable designs as well as smart-home technology.

Bohemian

Originating in the artist’s quarter of 19th century Paris, this style is bold and colorful with lots of patterns and textures. If you’re a world traveler with lots of collected treasures, this can be a great look for your space. This design thinks out of the box. When choosing a color scheme, look to earthy tones. Patterns from around the globe add a lot of interest in wallpaper, tile flooring, and rugs and carpets.

California Chic

This design style evolves the Southern California beach look into a more modern, high desert aesthetic. When incorporating into your new home build or remodel, choose wooden beams on tall ceilings. Spanish and Mexican tile can give a pop of color to kitchen backsplashes and showers. Handmade wooden doors add gorgeous detail to the space. And hand-crafted ironwork can be found in California Chic entryways and staircases.
