Why Do People Remodel?
A recent report was released by the National Association of Realtors (NAR) Research Group and the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI). This Remodeling Impact Report gives us a clear understanding of why homeowners choose to embark on home remodeling projects.
It also shows us some of the project outcomes and whether or not homeowners are actually happy with the project once it’s done. This can be a helpful resource if you are considering starting a home remodeling project.
First, let’s take a look at the numbers. In 2020, Americans spent $420 billion on remodeling their homes. Now, we all remember 2020. It was the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. People were home during lockdowns battling stress and anxiety. And one way we all worked through those emotions was with DIY projects around the house.
What Do People Remodel?
The report shared that when people choose to remodel their homes, they are typically wanting to upgrade old and worn-out surfaces, finishes, and materials. Next, they want to add features that improve the livability of their homes. And finally, they’re just ready for a change.
That explains why some of the top projects mentioned in the report include:
- Hardwood floor refinishing
- Insulation upgrading
- Basement finishing
- Closet renovation
- Kitchen remodeling
- Bathroom renovation
- Primary suite remodeling
When the projects were completed, the report found that most consumers were very pleased with the overall results. And when asked if they would tackle the project the same way again, 57 percent said yes.
But it can’t come as a surprise that 35 percent of people would make a few different choices after the fact. Sometimes the finishes and materials we want don’t function as well as we thought they would. This is one reason why it’s essential to work with experienced contractors and designers when choosing materials.
